Dorset Limekilns

The chalk and limestone of Dorset has been extensively burned for agricultural and building use. Large quantities of coal and culm were imported to feed the kilns.

The last kilns to operate in the county were those of the Shillingstone Lime & Stone Co Ltd which operated until at least 1989.
